About Gary L. Pugh, President / CEO

Gary Pugh, the founder and owner of Alternative Building Concepts, Inc., has decades of experience in both construction and in promoting green and sustainable building practices. He has been actively and enthusiastically promoting the use of SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) since building the first SIP home in Sonoma County, CA in 1988. Gary has designed projects with and installed SIPs from several manufacturers and is now an authorized dealer for Insulspan. He recently completed the distinguished SIP School in West Virginia, and is one of only 23 Certified SIP Installers in the entire United States – and one of only two in California (www.sipschool.org). In October, 2004, he completed the construction of the renowned “NowHouse” in San Francisco – the original green, digitally integrated, sustainable demonstration home built in the SBC parking lot as a demonstration home to display the energy efficient and technologically advanced products that are available to homeowners now, in only 36 days. Gary was also received the SIPA (Structural Insulated Panel Association) Excellence in Building Award (for residential structure under 3,000 sq. ft.) for the NowHouse, in addition to also receiving the overall Best in Show Award in 2005.

Gary is actively involved in the environmental building movement by recently being selected as Chairperson of the Educational Committee for the SIPA, as well as serving on the founding Board of the Redwood Empire Chapter of the US Green Building Council and as Director of Green Building for S.E.E. Green, a California-based Green Business non-profit group. He continues to work with the Santa Rosa Green Building Program that recently adopted Green Building Guidelines for the City of Santa Rosa and continues his work with the Design Leadership Institute for Ecology and the Economy and Habitat for Humanity. He recently completed the Certified Green Building Professional course offered by Build It Green, which was developed in conjunction with the Alameda County Waste Management Authority. Gary is currently expanding his education with various university classes and conferences. In August 2006, Gary was published in the Journal of Light Construction (JLC) for his article Building With SIPs and is a highly respected and in-demand speaker for building shows and seminars throughout the US.

Due to Gary’s emphasis on excellent customer service and quality workmanship, Alternative Building Concepts, Inc., has been awarded the prestigious Diamond Certified symbol of excellence for three years in a row after being rated highest in quality and customer satisfaction in a survey performed independently by the American Ratings Corporation. This excellence is reflected in Gary’s broad range of talents, and due to his integrity and vast experience has earned a vast network of satisfied associates and clients including contractors, architects and suppliers throughout the United States.
